One thing I truly love about Melbourne are its rooftop bars.
Rooftop bars were a fairly new concept to me when I moved to Melbourne in 2005 but that didn’t hold me back from developing an instant love affair with them. Luckily for me, the sky-high bars are becoming more and more in Melbourne and with its recent addition at Café BÜ, I can now even enjoy a coffee and breakfast on a rooftop.
Brilliant combination, right!?
Café BÜ is located smack in the middle of a residential area in Carlton North. If you don’t know where to look for it, you would probably never stumble across it. But luckily for you, I’ve already done the deeds for you.
So many cafes have gone with the minimalist, industrial feel. Café BÜ strikes a good balance between homely and edgy. Wooden boxes serve as tables and chairs without taking up too much space. The large window looking out onto Canning Street serves as a perfect quick-serve option for passersby after a snappy takeaway or quick weekend snack.
The day I went to check out this little gem of a coffee place, it was pouring down (of course. I curse Melbourne winter!). But even though it was cold and wet outside we could still sit on the rooftop balcony (slightly freezing – a heater would have come in handy) as the awning kept us dry.
I can clearly imagine though how beautiful it must be on a sunny day.
They use Five Senses beans and serve them any way you like – espresso, pour-over or through the clever Dripper.
Café BÜ is a small place and so is their menu. Don’t expect a huge choice. However what they lack in variety they make up in quality. The coffee and toasties and cakes are delicious.
They also add a chocolate coated coffee bean to every hot drink you order – nice touch that was very well appreciated by us on that cold day.
I was very disappointed by the weather that day but the place itself totally made up for it.
I have to come back on a sunnier day, even though it’s a but of a drive for me to get there. But what can I say, I just can’t resist a good rooftop.
